Only real parameter is that it has to be in January, which kind of sucks since most of the country will be frozen or wet.
Any recommendations? Open to literally anything. I was thinking fly out and do an ice rally-school ffor a few days but I don’t know if I want to spend that much. Actually, I know I don’t want to spend that much.
I also considered San Jose, solely because they have the best pizzaria on the planet. The town itself seemed pretty boring though.
Another thought is British Columbia for outdoorsy things, but, uh.... That doesn’t use the above ticket as it’s not domestic. Boooooo.
I would love to get into snowboarding this year, but considering I’ve done it so infrequently I’m not sure if there’s much point flying somewhere amazing when even the local spots are an absolute blast for someone of my limited skill level.
I’ve never been to the east coast. Sounds somewhat miserable in January though.
I want to do a camping/hiking/atnional parks adventure.... But ditto the whole January thing above.
Hawaii would probably be the best bang-for-buck. That said I was kind of hoping to save my first Hawaii trip for the next time I head to Thailand, because crossing the pacific in one go sucks. Thailand isn’t until April though, and.... I need something before April. Every fiber of my being is screaming at me to leeeeeeeeave town and it’s only October :(
Bahamas is another idea. I’m unsure if I can fly to US territories for free tho
Thoughts?

The Southwest? There’s lots of national parks down that way, and they’re probably more deserted than truly unpleasant that time of year (though I really have no idea what the weather is like there in January ).

Key West is fun, give you sort of a taste of the Caribbean on a domestic ticket.
*Also the Bahamas is not a US territory, its an independent nation and Commonwealth realm in personal union with Canada, Jamaica, the UK, etc. etc.

I really, reaaaally want to go to Detroit. In the winter too! I want to experience it. But... Not this time.

My primary assistant at work has a place down in La Paz in Baja - it looks pretty darn spectacular down there... (his partner has cash, honestly he probably doesn’t need to to work.)
Money no object I’d still like to do a Porsche European delivery - drive down the Spanish Mediterranean coast or maybe northern Italy and Croatia in a new GT4...

Oo of. First I failed the oppo US states geography quiz, now this.

Second this, there’s a ton you can do in the southwest in January, and you’ll avoid all of the people who go during summer break.
![]() 10/11/2019 at 23:53 |

Hawaii definitely. Not affected by seasons. If Puerto Rico (actually a U S “territory”) counts (doubt it), that, too. If it has to be continental then maybe New Orleans, Miami, or Key West?

My parents went to alaska one winter. They went in late febuary to the Anchorage Fur Rondy (winter carnival). cheap as hell

Puerto Rico is pretty cool. I’m going again in the spring.
Or if you want some great drinking, try San Diego. It’ll still be nice in January, and it’s home to a plethora of amazing breweries.

Yeah I think the Baham ian PM Hubert Minnis and Her Majesty would want a word. Lol.

San Jose definitely doesn’t have the best anything on the planet, let alone pizzeria. Go to Kauai, bring a tent, I’ll tell you the beaches to sleep on.

You can’t bring a bike to the places worth going to in the Southwest, we’ve designated them as wilderness areas.

If US territories count fly to the US Virgin Islands - They’re amazing. I’d fly into St Thomas and take the ferry over to St John and stay there, the island is 2/3 national park and stunning. Amazing snorkeling and scenery.
I also like the gulf coast of Florida in January, think Ft Meyers or Naples. Cool but not cold, still warm enough to kayak through mangroves and walk along the beaches.

You should go to the dragon! I bet it would be empty in January and if it has snow you would enjoy it more anyways. Definitely less cold/wet than elsewhere on the east coast. Not sure where you would fly into though. Charlotte? Somewhere in TN? I would probably use it for skiing and pick some place like Jackson hole where the airport is absurdly expensive but hey free flight. But like you said, skill ratio there is poor. Other than the dragon, there’s also Arkansas which also has really cool roads and hiking in the Ozarks. Should be minor winter weather there due to how South it is.

Cold as absolute fuck at night....at least in the good national parks, which are mostly at altitude.

Hawaii, New Orleans, or Miami.

It wouldn’t be the worst time of year to bum around Southern AZ if the desert is your thing. Big Bend National Park is also in the area and would probably be deserted that time of year, and few people would be out in my back yard in the form of the Organ Mountains/Desert Peaks national monument and White Sands National Monument . Carlsbad Caverns a bit further East in NM would likewise be pretty empty .
Weather in January depends heavily on elevation. It will be cold in the mountains, and snow is possible. In the desert lowlands, lows will be just below freezing at night and in the 40's/low 50's during the day. That said, a storm and cold front coming through can sink temperatures much colder for a few days and leave a few inches of snow even on the desert floor.

In parks like Joshua tree winter time is actually the high season because it’s so damn hot in the summer. But Arches and Canyon lands are damn near deserted and absolutely beautiful with snow!

Just need to shed a few pounds and then I’m sure it’ll fit in oversized baggage. There’s always Turo! I did see a yellow NB on there in North Carolina when I was looking for an upcoming trip. But I have two passengers so I couldn't pick that one. I did see a 500 Abarth in Charlotte when browsing specifically to do a dragon trip.

And a chain joint nonetheless. I consider deepdish more of a bad lasagna than pizza. Midwesterner cuisine is strange to me.

You can fly to Seattle then just take a ferry to Victoria, BC. Great place.
At the extreme other end of the country, January is a great time to go to Key West, FL.

no.. and honestly we don’t make very good money - h e gets his from family and his partner. It’s a shrinking industry, is already significantly being replaced by offshore and AI. US staffing is only about 4 0% of what it was 20 years ago even though volume is more than double...

I’ve been to all three and loved them. The snorkeling is out of this world.
As a follow-up question from someone who is hopefully moving to the Bay area soonish, what’s the pizza place in San Jose you’re in love with.
![]() 10/12/2019 at 23:34 |

He said patxi’s in a comment above. Its actually a small chain all over the bay area. If you like deep dish, its not bad.
If you like nea politan style(thin crust), there are some really fantastic pizza places-Tonys Pizzari a Na pole tana , Zero Zero , Pizzaria Defina and my personal favorite, Napole tana Pizzaria in Mountain View...a small hole in the wall with fucking awesome pizza.
One of the few things I miss from the Bay Area(well, I guess there are some more.. definitely not alot of the people, the lifestyle, the traffic and cost of living..lol).

Palm Springs would be a great place to go in January. Sunny and dry, but warm and not hot. It’s also a good jumping-off point for a day trip (or longer) to Joshua Tree National Park.
